Subsea Noise Mitigation

The worlds first ADBM Noise Mitigation Deployment System: protecting marine wildlife during offshore operations.

In the world of offshore wind energy, it is crucial to mitigate underwater noise emission during the installation of offshore wind turbine foundations. Recognizing the significance of this challenge, TME has developed the worlds first Noise Mitigation Deployment System in 2019, specifically designed to address this issue for Van Oord during the installation of monopiles for the Borssele offshore windfarm III & IV. Borssele III & IV offshore wind farms are located off the coast of the Netherlands in the North Sea. These wind farms are part of the larger Borssele Wind Farm Zone, which is a significaant initiative by the Dutch government to expand offshore wind energy production.

Using the ADBM Helmholtz resonator arrays for mitigating the underwater noise, TME has designed the framework and mounting system enabling the deployment of the ADBM resonators around the monopiles during pile driving.

The Borssele III & IV ADBM noise mitigation solution stands as a proven technology that has served its purpose well. Its implementation has not only met but exceeded expectations in safegaurding marine wildlife during offshore operations. As the demand for renewable energy continues to grow, ensuring minimal ecological impact is essential, and the Borssele III & IV noise mitigation deployment solution has set a high standard in this regard.

TME's patented next generation NMS system

With the current trend of increasing pile diameters and the necessity for pile driving in greater water depths with floating vessel's, the significance of vertical hydrodynamic loads on the deployment system may intensify. Anticipating on this development TME has designed a next generation noise mitigation deployment system compatible with the proven noise mitigating technology of the ADBM resonator arrays. Functional advantages next generation NMS system:

Structural integrity with low hydrodynamic loads.

TME's next generation NMS ensures safe and reliable offshore operations. It also enables a higher workability, less impact in the splash zone and limited impact on the gripper design. It is a scalable solution allowing operations in higher water depths (up to 80m) and with larger pile diameters.

Better noise mitigating properties

By significantly reducing noise levels during pile driving, it not only minimizes environmental impact but also enhances operational efficiency, making it a win-win solution for both project stakeholders and marine ecosystems.

Substantial cutback in operating costs

Operational efficiency is further enhanced by the substantial cutback in operating costs facilitated by the TME NMS. Short cycle times are achievable without the hassle of alignment issues and complicated winch controls. The NMS system is distanced from the MP preventing entanglement and maintenance is simplified due to good accessibility of resonator panels and interchangeable modules. Combined these features minimize downtime and maximise productivity.

Upendable for transit operations

Transitioning seamlessly between operational phases, the NMS can be effortlessly positioned in vertical gripper mode for transit operations. Its compact, lightweight design enables efficient handling, ensuring swift deployment and relocation as needed, thus optimizing project timelines and resource utilization.

(De)coupling mechanism

Equipped with a sophisticated (de)coupling mechanism, the NMS can seamlessly open and close with gripper doors in horizontal and vertical positions, with an instant release function for emergency monopile abandonment, providing an exit strategy in the most challenging circumstances.
